Frequently Asked Questions

Spray Foam Insulation Questions

What can spray foam have the highest R-value?

Closed-cell foam, at about R-5 to R-7 per inch according to HomeGuide, against R-3.5 to R-3.7 for open-cell. That makes it useful where space is tight: rim joists, rafters and shallow walls. In an open attic, depth is cheap, so loose fill reaches R-49 for less.

Does spray foam insulation stop mold?

Foam does not kill mold, but closed-cell foam keeps warm, damp indoor air off cold surfaces where it would condense. That helps on rim joists, basement walls and crawl spaces. Active leaks have to be fixed first.

What R-value does Pennsylvania require in an attic?

The Insulation Institute's summary of Pennsylvania's code (2021 IECC with state amendments, effective January 1, 2026) lists R-49 for ceilings in Climate Zone 5, and OpenEI places Erie County in Zone 5A. That applies to new work, but it is a sensible target for an existing attic too.

Will insulation stop ice dams in Erie?

Ice dams form when heat leaks into the attic and melts roof snow. Sealing the attic floor and adding insulation cuts that heat. Ventilation and roof shape also matter, so we check the soffits and eaves while we are up there.

What are the disadvantages of a spray foam roof?

Spray foam roofing is a commercial flat-roof system that needs a protective coating and periodic recoating, and it is sensitive to weather during installation. We do not install foam roofing; our work is insulation inside buildings, including foam on the underside of roof decks.

How much does spray foam insulation cost in Erie?

National guides put it at $1.50 to $5.00 per square foot installed (HomeGuide, 2026). Job size, foam type, access and season change the total. We give you a written estimate after a visit, and that estimate is the price.

Spray Foam Insulation Questions

Open or closed cell for an Erie basement?

Closed-cell, almost always. It slows vapor and does not absorb water, so it keeps damp basement air off cold block and wood.

Can spray foam be applied in winter?

In heated spaces, yes. Unheated attics and pole barns are harder in deep cold because foam needs a working temperature range. We schedule around the weather.

Does spray foam need covering?

In living spaces and many basements, foam has to be covered by a thermal barrier like drywall, unless a product rated for exposure is used. We explain this before you sign.

Who manufactures spray foam insulation?

Several national chemical companies make spray foam systems. What matters more for you is the type (open or closed cell), the thickness, and that it is installed to the maker's instructions, all of which we list on the quote.

Attic Insulation & Air Sealing Questions

Will a sealed attic stop ice dams?

It removes the main cause, heat leaking into the attic. Roof shape and ventilation also matter, and we check both.

Why is there frost in my attic?

Usually moist indoor air leaking into the cold attic and freezing on the roof deck. Air sealing and venting bath fans outside are the usual fixes.

Do I need to remove old insulation?

Only if it is wet, moldy, contaminated or in the way of sealing. Clean, dry insulation can stay under the new layer.

How long does an attic job take?

Many attics are done in a day. Kneewall attics or jobs with removal take longer, and the quote gives a time estimate.

Basement & Crawl Space Insulation Questions

Is rim joist insulation worth it?

Usually yes. The rim leaks air around the entire house, the job is small, and most people notice warmer first-floor rooms.

Should I seal my crawl space vents?

If you insulate the crawl space walls and cover the ground, yes, the vents get sealed. If you insulate the floor above instead, the crawl stays vented. We help you choose.

Will foam stop my basement from leaking?

No. Foam is not waterproofing. Grading, gutters or drainage have to handle water first.

Can you insulate a crawl space under an addition?

Yes. Additions often have their own small crawl spaces that are colder than the main basement. We look at each one.

Pole Barn & Garage Insulation Questions

Will spray foam stop my pole barn from dripping?

Closed-cell foam on the steel keeps warm, moist air from reaching cold metal, which is what causes the drip. Ventilation still matters, especially in livestock buildings.

How thick should foam be in a pole barn?

It depends on how warm you want the building and how you use it. A cold storage barn needs less than a heated shop. We give you options with R-values on the quote.

Can you spray a pole barn in winter?

Unheated buildings are hard to spray in deep cold. Late spring through fall is easiest.

Blown-In Insulation Questions

Is blown-in or spray foam better for my attic?

For an open attic floor, sealing plus blown-in usually gives the same comfort for much less. Foam is better for tight rooflines and kneewalls.

Does blown-in insulation settle?

Loose fill settles a little over time, so it is blown slightly deeper. Dense-packed wall cellulose is packed tight specifically so it does not settle.

Can you add blown-in on top of old insulation?

Yes, if the old material is dry and clean. Wet or contaminated insulation should come out first.

Insulation Removal Questions

Does old insulation have to come out before new goes in?

Only if it is wet, moldy, contaminated or blocking air sealing. Clean, dry insulation can stay.

What does vermiculite look like?

Small, light, pebbly granules, gray-brown or gold. If you see it, leave it alone and get it tested.

How long does removal take?

Many attics are cleared in a day. Large or heavily contaminated attics take longer.
